“Critical Thinking and Evolving Open Scholarship in the Era of AI” is the FSCI 2026 theme. FSCI organizers reviewed course submissions contributing to and exploring this theme, though all ideas in scholarly communication were welcome for consideration. You can view our Courses & Abstracts right now. The theme is shaping the institute’s plenary events and community events, which are currently taking shape and will be finalized by July.

Scholarly communication professionals continue to examine and explore the relationships across research workflows, scholarly communities, and academic output in an information ecosystem impacted by artificial intelligence (AI). FSCI is a platform for professionals in the field to educate colleagues about timely aspects of this important work. FSCI courses often focus on one particular aspect of this work and provide practical training, while paying attention to the broader issues at play. Other FSCI courses look more squarely at theoretical problems and explore new solutions. All have a unique set of attendees, from many different countries, cultures, disciplines and communities of practice, with a common interest to enhance scholarly communication efforts.

Virtual courses will be conducted during the week of Monday July 27th through Friday, July 31st. 

  • Courses will meet 3 times over these 5 days, with sessions usually between 1 and 3 hours long – for a total of 3-9 hours of course time. 
  • Each course will meet via Zoom as in prior years. 
  • Courses can continue collaborative, asynchronous work between and after course sessions, as needed.
  • We shall offer courses that leverage the online learning environment to engage our global community of researchers and professionals in scholarly communication and open research practices. 

While we hope all can join one of the courses, we will also feature several Plenary sessions in service of this year’s theme. These will be freely available for all to access, whether enrolled in the courses or not – though it is important to secure your free registration to join these live events.
