Why do we need FSCI 2018?

Winds of change are blowing through the halls of academia.

The monograph and journal article have long been established for scholars to stake their claim on original ideas while also sharing their thinking with the wider community.

The PDF enabled these communication channels to move smoothly into the digital. Methods to measure research performance, output and effectiveness have grown around them. These have been used to compare the performance of researchers, institutions and even countries.

But the internet has opened up many more possibilities for sharing scholarly work. From the development of preprints for early review of new research through embedding raw and visualized data in research articles to new ways of discussion through social media.

The potential for new forms of scholarly communication has never been higher.

These new processes enable greater collaboration across disciplines (even across the humanities and sciences). They will yield new insights with more reliability, transparency and accountability. They offer greater confidence for the wider community in the academic approach, the scientific method and the aspiration of studying our world, and ourselves, to improve life for all.

FSCI aims to focus conversations around these issues and to hasten development of new models for a new world of scholarly communication, beyond the PDF.
