Description
This group will work on establishing and overseeing a FORCE11 Summer Institute at the University of California San Diego, focussing on contemporary trends in scholarly and scientific communication. The goal of this institute would be to provide courses and workshops in contemporary topics in scholarly and scientific communication, ranging from the beginner's level (e.g. understanding impact; the contemporary publication process; introduction to the research cycle; introduction to data management; and so on), to the advanced (e.g. developing actionable papers; beginning a start up in the scholarly communication space; maximising impact across disciplines: the administrators' perspective). There would also be an administrators’ stream, focusses on understanding, evaluating, and promoting success and best practice in contemporary scholarly communication.
Goals
In terms of financing, the goal of this Institute would be to develop a steady revenue stream to support Force 11 and provide a means by which Force 11 could materially assist a host university by developing a high profile international event. Because the institute is on the one hand annual and on the other hand a project, it would, at least in its initial years before its revenue became self-sustaining, be able to situate itself well for external funding applications while still providing a steady income stream for Force 11 and its host institution.
