AAK Coalition Face to Face meeting: Bringing open annotation to all scholarly works

2016-04-17 16:00:00

Join us for the kick off  face to face meeting for the Annotating all Knowledge coalition.  This is an all-day workshop, open to all, but space is limited so please register ASAP.  You do not have to attend the FORCE2016 meeting to attend, although we strongly encourage it!  Please note that this is an all day workshop.

OUTCOMES:

Many thanks to all who participated before, during and after the meeting.

1)  Detailed notes and links to presentations can be found on the program agenda

2)  Read Jon Udell's blog summarizing the discussions:  A coalition of Scholarly Annotators

3)  Link to "Summary and Next Steps" presentation by Brooks Hanson

4)  High level summary of meeting, notes and outcomes

5) Convergence on a set of attributes for an interoperable annotation.

PROGRAM

Goals of the workshop:  At the first Beyond the PDF conference, the goals were lofty and the aims clear: “to move us beyond a static and disparate data and knowledge representation”. With open, web-based annotation a reality, the time and technology is ripe to realize this vision. This workshop will bring together key players in the scholarly communications ecosystem to explore the feasibility and desirability for equipping all books, articles and other digital media, new and old, with the capability for readers to create, share, and discover annotations from colleagues, authors, friends and experts around the globe. This technology should be open source, federated, and based on standards. The goal: to bring open annotation to all scholarly works within 5 years.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the Annotating All Knowledge initiative, to network, and to explore and define the scope of AAK Coalition activities.  The workshop will feature presentations, discussions and demonstrations covering current progress, opportunities and barriers to bringing a pervasive, open annotation layer to all scholarly work. We will consider how open annotation fits into the larger idea of the 21st century Scholarly Commons, through linking of annotations to systems like ORCIDs. Outcomes will be to forge relationships and outline next steps towards achieving the goal.

Agenda

We've listed some desired outcomes on the agenda.  Two of the most important goals for driving technology development are:  1) to agree to a definition of interoperable annotation for scholarship;  2)  to define the most compelling and important use cases for interoperable annotation.

THIS WILL BE AN ALL DAY WORKSHOP, BUT YOU CAN REGISTER SEPARATELY FOR THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON SESSIONS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE DAY

We've created brief surveys to start gathering input on these two issues to serve as the basis of discussions at the meeting:

1)  How would you define interoperable annotation?

          Survey results

          Voting sheet for definitions

          Elements of interoperable definitions

2)  Why do you need/want open, interoperable annotations in scholarship?

          Survey results

          User stories organized by themes

Hypothes.is will be hosting a happy hour on Saturday, 4/16 for all meeting attendees.

The workshop will be held at  OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building, Room 3A001

Please note:  On Sunday, April 17, there will be a race in Portland that could affect traffic to and from the CLSB. See more information here.
