Description:  This session proposes to discuss the improvement of ways in which audiovisual media can be used in online scholarly publications. We intend to discuss the topic from two different angles: audiovisual media as original sources for research and as a means of expressing scholarly thought. Of interest here is the way that digital medias, and the opportunities posed to ‘manifestations of thought in all its forms’ wrought through have or have not been fully taken into the prospect of scholarly, academic and practice-oriented research culture.

For scholars in the digital humanities, it is becoming ever more feasible to provide access to readers to the source materials they have engaged with throughout their research. No longer is the film or television researcher confined to visits to the archive – many source materials have been digitised and are increasingly coming to be published online. In analogy to several projects that explore the possibilities of publishing the original data sets used for the research, Sound and Vision has been working on a plug-in for the open source Open Journal Systems that allows for the embedding of audiovisual media in the research text. We will present the current version of this plug-in and explore further needs and possible developments for such a functionality, touching upon topics of audiovisual citation, persistent availability and IPR.

Multimedia media productions in themselves also increasingly become feasible entities of scholarly expressions – in education frameworks, MOOCs and academic presentations are highly accessible and find a wider online audience. By remixing, reframing and combining media sources in a multimedia context, scholars an additional, or even central medium for thought, research, dissemination and publication. Further, practice-based research contexts (informatics, computing, medical research, science) and creative research areas (the arts, design) outputs can be given more equilibrated footing on express thinking in ways that take advantage of the multiplicitous representations of ideas possible through online digital media.  If scholarly publications are to resonate with this potential, what ways of framing the tools used to create these publications could be developed on top of existing web infrastructures in order for it to fit the scholarly research paradigms?

The session will contain a presentation of existing initiatives that develop tools to allow a greater coalescence between online publishing tools and audiovisual media. In a moderated discussion we will discuss the needs for scholars from different disciplines and the various forms and requisites that would be needed to expand the scope for the development of these tools.
